Jay Z just can not seem to catch a break these days. In the midst of coming under fire for his recent handling of MLB star Robinson Cano and trying to make good on his 22-day vegan challenge, the hip-hop mogul is in the middle of a legal battle centered on his 2000 mega-hit song "Big Pimpin."
Hov's attempt to wrap up a six-year-old lawsuit has backfired. He is being sued over the sampling of "Khosara, Khosara," from the 1960 Egyptian film Fata Ahlami, used on his hit song, "Big Pimpin," which featured legendary hip-hop duo UGK.
The case is quite complicated but the gist of it involves the nephew of late Egyptian composer Baligh Hamdi, who argues that Jay Z mutilated the original song, violated "moral rights," and despite the existence of a settlement agreement that appeared to give "Big Pimpin" producers a valid license, infringed a copyright.
In a last ditch effort to get himself out of this bond, Jay Z issued a statute of limitations given Hamdi's nephew, Ahab Joseph Nafal, reportedly knew about the song since its release but only decided to file the suit in 2007.
Nafal fired back arguing that the song has been included in Hov's concerts and said he deserved some of the pocket money from his shows since most of the song's sales have already been received.
This is an extremely complex situation but Hov is optimistic that the odds will work out in his favor.
