The Beats by Dre franchise has announced that the brand is moving on to other endeavors. Beats Music, the digital music spinoff, is slated to launch in January.
The launch date, which was originally set for sometime late 2013, was announced by CEO Ian Rogers in a blog post Wednesday. Rogers acknowledged the delay, attaching a video of an Orson Welles pitch in which the late actor says, "We will sell no wine before its time."
While Rogers didn't offer up any details on the actual model of Beats Music, we're guessing it will be something similar to Spotify, Rhapsody and Rdio.
In his post, Rogers said:
"We're nearly ready for liftoff. Thanks to your diligent testing and feedback we are locked and loaded, ready to launch here in the US in January, 2014."
He went on to suggest reserving your username so that "your preferred handle will be ready for you and not competing with everyone else with the same name."
Beats Music is based on the platform of MOG, a subscription music service. The service was bought in July 2012 by Beats Electronics LLC.
MOG costs $10 a month for unlimited playback of more than 15 million tracks on mobile devices, or $5 a month for ad-free listening on computers.
MOG also sent subscribers emails Wednesday encouraging them to save usernames on BeatsMusic.com.
The Beats franchise was founded in 2008 by legendary rapper, producer, actor Dr. Dre. He sure has come a long way from his days with N.W.A.
