Aron Ralston is known for the intense and unfathomable experience when he became trapped in a Utah cannon and was left with no other choice but to free himself by amputating his own forearm. He shared his story in his best-selling book and then the film 127 Hours starring James Franco made a huge impression, receiving Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Actor for Franco.
Unfortunately he is in the news again in a very different context. He has been arrested in Denver for suspected domestic violence.
According to the Associated Press, Ralston, 38, was arrested on Saturday and held in a Denver County jail. As of right now there are not clear details from the Denver Police Department, but he is being held for one count of "wronging to minors."
Booking documents do not state whether or not Ralston currently has an attorney for the case. The Denver Post included in their report that Ralston was arrested at a single-family home along with the apparent owner, Vita Shannon, who was also taken in for the same charge.
Ralston is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Stories like this make it difficult to look at the character we know from Franco's performance in the same light. It's naturally difficult to think about someone who overcame adversity in the most gruesome way as being someone who would allegedly hurt anyone else, but obviously the two notions are not synonymous. We'll see in the coming days how the case plays out, what the facts are and where Ralston stands with the law.
