Bad news for Ariana Grande, one of pop's biggest rising stars has been slapped with a big old lawsuit over her smash hit "The Way." According to The Hollywood Reporter, Minder Music who own who own the rights to The Jimmy Castor Bunch's musical catalogue are suing the singer and Sony/ATV due to similarities between her 2013 song and The Jimmy Castor Bunch's 1972 song "Troglodyte."
According to the lawsuit, the phrase "What we gotta go right here is go back, back into time," which featured artist Mac Miller says at the beginning of Grande's "The Way" is "substantially similar" to the opening lines of "Troglodyte," which read: "What we're gonna go right here is go back, way back, back into time."
Minder Music's lawyers claim that not only are the phrases incredibly similar, but the "enunciation speed with a fast and consistent pace for 'What we gotta do right' and a slightly slower pace for 'here is go back'" alone with pauses are nearly identical in "The Way" and "Troglodyte."
Additionally, the music is copyrighted, and artists such as Christina Aguilera and NWA have asked permission to use the phrase before, according to THR.

There is no denying the similarities between the two song's opening phrases, but will the lawsuit stand ground?
Minder Music is looking for $150,000 worth in damages from Grande and co. and a declaration of willful infringement.
Grande and her lawyers have yet to comment on the case.
