The Beatles, Kraftwerk, The Isley Brothers and Kris Kristofferson will be honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards by the Recording Academy on the night before the 56th Annual Grammy Awards.
Take a look at those names again, someone inside the Academy got paid a lot of money to decide on names that would make people say "Man, the Grammys sure are spreading the love around to all sorts of genres!"
"It is a great privilege to recognize such an exceptional group of honorees and celebrate their accomplishments and contributions to the recording industry," Recording Academy President/CEO (and probably the aforementioned guy) Neil Portnow said in a statement released to Roling Stone. "Their legacies are timeless and legendary, and their creativity will continue to influence and inspire future generations."
For those confused: Kraftwerk are considered the godfathers of electronic music. Kristofferson is a much venerated country music songwriter. If you don't know who the Isley Brothers and The Beatles are by now, I can't help you.
In addition to the Lifetime awards, several people will receive Trustees awards for their work in the field of music. Among those being honored are famed photog Jim Marshall, Italian composer Ennio Morricone (here's where I mention that he wrote the score to The Good, The Bad & The Ugly and leave you wah-wah-wah-ing to yourself all day) and Rick Hall, owner of the much-mythologized FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
