Book of Mormon star Josh Gad is teaming up with writing duo Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez to take on the film adaptation of the classic television series Gilligan's Island. Warner Brothers Pictures has also signed Gad for a starring role in the upcoming movie, but there has yet to be a confirmation on which character that would be.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the children of Gilligan's Island creator Sherwood Schwartz (Lloyd and Ross Schwartz) will executive produce the project along with Tracey and Cathy Silvers.
THR reports:
The show told of seven castaways on an island and their comedic attempts to find a way off. The lead was a character named Gilligan, played by Bob Denver, the goofy screw-up who usually found a way to unintentionally ruin any plan. Other characters included Gillian's best friend was the Skipper, plus an elderly millionaire couple, a movie star who was partially based on Marilyn Monroe, a scientist who came up with schemes to get off the island, and a girl-next-door-type farmer girl.
Gad is a familiar face in the industry, but he recently brokeout on Broadway with Book of Mormon. This year he appeared alongside Ashton Kutcher in Jobs and was a voice in Disney's Frozen. The young actor is also preparing to star in a Sam Kinison biopic. This new writing and starring position with the Gilligan's Island movie will surely make him a household name.
