Zach Braff will reveal his next film Wish I Was Here at the Sundance Film Festival in January. His Garden State follow-up will be one of the 98 films making their world debut out of the 119 feature-length films shown at the festival.
The festival will take place Jan. 16 - 26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. Braff's film, which he directed, co-wrote with his brother Adam and stars in, was funded by a Kickstarter campaign he created earlier this year, which surpassed its $2 million goal.
The film centers around Braff's character Aidan Bloom. He's a struggling actor who is stuck in a financial rut while also dealing with a rocky relationship with his wife Sarah, played by Kate Hudson. When Bloom's sick father Saul (Mandy Patinkin) can't pay for his grandchildren's private schooling anymore, Bloom ends up home-schooling the kids. The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons also stars in the film (he was in Garden State as well). Josh Gad (Book of Morman) and Ashley Green (Twilight) also star in the movie.
Braff's plan to fund the movie through Kickstarter got mixed reviews at first, considering the actor is well connected in the industry, but he said he took that approach so that he could maintain creative control over the movie.
On the Kickstarter page for the film, Braff wrote: "I couldn't help but think (like I'm sure so many other independent filmmakers did) maybe there is a new way to finance smaller, personal films that didn't involve signing away all your artistic control."
At the end of the campaign, Braff ended up raising $3,105,473 with the help of 46,520 supporters.
