Musical about The Pogues being written by 'The Wire' creator David Simon

David Simon is the man responsible for some of the best television to hit the small screen. He created The Wire and Treme, but is now looking towards the stage for his next project. This time around, he wants to make a musical based on the songs of The Pogues, an Irish band formed in 1982 that has become an iconic sound for those of the Irish heritage. Though this project sounds incredibly random, Simon is a fan of the band and hopes to properly pay tribute to them with this musical.

The Evening Herald reports:

It sounds like the unlikeliest of collaborations - a musical written by The Wire creator David Simon based on Pogues songs. But it could well be coming to a theatre near you, with Simon reportedly having completed a first draft for a show that is sure to grab the interest of an Irish audience. Simon's script has been submitted to Druid's artistic director Garry Hynes, though few details have emerged other than that the story is based on songs by the Pogues. Simon collaborated on the project with the Pogues late guitarist Phil Chevron, who died in October.

You can see Simon's fanaticism of The Pogues throughout the episodes of The Wire, with the band played on three separate occasions. One of these episodes featured The Pogues' song "The Body of an American" being played and sung by the cast during a wake.

If anyone is fitted to bring The Pogues to the stage in the form of a musical, it's David Simon.
