Comedian Louis C.K. has found a wonderfully creative and successful outlet with his FX series Louie, which hit the airwaves in 2010. The show will begin its fourth season in May 2014, but the comedian apparently already has an end date in mind for the show.
Louis C.K. is a guest on the third season of Jerry Seinfeld's web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. For those of you unfamiliar with Seinfeld's show, he drives an exotic (and often old or unique) car to a comedian's house, picks them up and the two go get coffee. But the real joy of the series is in the conversation between Seinfeld and his guest, which often yields humorous anecdotes and even some revelations from the other comedian.
Such is the case with Louis C.K. when he and Seinfeld discussed ending their respective shows, Louie and Seinfeld. The two drove through Manhattan in an orange Fiat with no doors and wicker seats and they had the following exchange:
"Seinfeld: How many years [do] you think you'll do your show?
Louis C.K.: I'd say seven or eight, tops.
Seinfeld: Why? Why would you ever stop?
Louis C.K.: You stopped after nine years.
Seinfeld: Yeah, but your show's different. Your show can grow with you. My show was about four single people living this certain type of lifestyle. We didn't want to do Kramer's fiftieth birthday party."
On the one hand, Seinfeld is right. His show could conceivably have gone on and on for decades and changed with society, but it went out on top before the comedy had a chance to fall flat. Louis C.K. appears to feel the same way, and the comedian has said in the past that he has other interests.
So enjoy Louie while you can, because it won't be around forever.
