The Season 3 finale of Homeland had no shortage of high-quality moments as it featured the death of Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) and set the stage for the next season of the show, which can pretty much go anywhere now that the producers have more or less hit the reset button.

Toward the end of the finale, Carrie (Claire Danes) was seemingly working well for new CIA director Lockhart, who is partially responsible for Brody's death. But why would Carrie, who has been so emotional when it comes to all things Brody, be okay with working for one of the men who helped cause Brody's demise?

A reader of the "Matt's Inside Line" column at TVLine asked that very question, and showrunner Alex Gansa responded with the following explanation:

"Carrie had to make a choice. Is she going to continue to do what she loves to do, which is be an intelligence officer, or is she going to hold her anger and feelings of betrayal against the man who is now sitting in the chair that is going to determine where her career goes. That's one of the reasons for the four-month time break. And that was, frankly, one of the things that we were trying to go with was, 'OMG, Carrie is OK with all of this. How is that possible?' Well, Carrie is a pragmatist. This is job a calling to her. And although [Brody's death] was incredibly painful, she... was able to move on from that and decide that her career was more important than holding a grudge."
