Broadway is hoping to get a jolt of testosterone with its new musical Bronx Bombers, which chronicles New York Yankees greats like Yogi Berra, Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson. In fact, the Yankees organization is even helping to promote this "Broadway for straight men" musical.
The Hollywood Reporter reports:
"The New York area is home to 10 professional sports teams, but attendance for Broadway shows last season topped all of them combined. According to the Broadway League, an association of producers and theater owners, women make up 67 percent of Broadway audiences. Producers Fran Kirmser and Tony Ponturo look at those stats and see an opportunity to lure to Broadway an elusive demo: the sports-loving male."
"Sometimes when we talk to that theater person who says, 'Sports, really?' we try to articulate that these are really stories about people and their jobs and their influences and their motivations," Ponturo said, admitting that this show has already seen some skepticism from the Broadway community.
In regards to the MLB franchise getting involved, in the same way that Yankees fans are informed about games, tickets, or any other team-related information, they will be informed about Bronx Bombers. So if you subscribe to the Yankees e-mail newsletter, expect to receive some news on the Broadway musical as well.
Ponturo added: "MLB Network gave us some free commercial spots."
Is this the start of the so-called "Broadway for straight men" movement? How do you think Bronx Bombers will do on Broadway considering it's being treated as such a different musical?
