In a world of television evolving to deal with the expansion of the Internet, Hulu is definitely performing up to the times especially in terms of original programming. This week, Hulu announced a new slate of Hulu Originals as well as some returning series. 2014 will see the premiere of Hulu Originals like the supernatural comedy Deadbeat and reality TV satire The Hotwives of Orlando.
Hulu's new and returning original shows are produced to compliment the catalogue of shows already available on the streaming service from networks like NBC, NBC and Fox. Now Hulu is somewhat like a new network in a way.
"We think about how a show is complementary and how it won't compete with what's on the service already," Charlotte Koh, head of development for Hulu Originals, said. "You want to create an environment for the consumer where they feel like there's variety."
The Hotwives of Orlando, the reality TV satire series stars noted comedic actresses Casey Wilson (Happy Endings), Angela Kinsey (The Office) and Kristen Schaal (Flight of the Concords). Produced by actor Paul Scheer, this new original series is set to debut in 2014.
"It's a destination," Scheer said of Hulu. "That's the cool thing about them. We got to make a real TV show that is not just a web series."
Another new series is Deadbeat, a supernatural comedy following Tyler Labine (Reaper) as a psychic medium that exterminates ghosts in New York City.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "the site will air new seasons of Fresh Meat, Pramface, Elite New Face, Line of Duty, Moody Family and The Only Way Is Essex. Those shows previously fell under the Hulu Exclusive banner, but will now be designated Hulu Originals."
