If you're a fan of hip-hop and Broadway, you may want to make a trip to the Big Apple this summer. Holler If Ya Hear Me, a musical inspired by the late Tupac Shakur, has been given an official opening day.
The musical, directed by Kenny Leon, will premiere New York City's Palace Theatre May 26 and then will officially open June 19.
Leon is best known for his Broadway work on plays including A Raisin in the Sun with Sean Combs; Fences, with Denzel Washington and Viola Davis; and The Mountaintop, with Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett.
The musical's description reads:
"Holler If Ya Hear Me, the world inside Tupac Shakur's music and lyrics, blazes to life in a non-biographical story about friendship, family, revenge, change and hope. Inner city lives struggle for peace against the daily challenges they face in this entertaining and original musical. Through the poetry of one of the 20th century's most influential and culturally prominent voices, we are given a window into realities of the streets still relevant today."
Tupac is considered one of the most influential rappers and has sold over 75 million albums worldwide.
Holler If Ya Hear Me, a non-biographical musical, was written by Todd Kreidler and will be produced by Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, Eric L. Gold, Chunsoo Shin and Jessica Green.
Casting for the musical has not yet been announced.
