FX's critically acclaimed drama Justified just kicked off its fifth season this week, and now a new interview with network president Nick Grad has confirmed a sixth season will be happening. That is the good news. The bad news is that there probably won't be a season seven. FX is reportedly ending the series next season.
Series showrunner Graham Yost has always said that he considered Justified a six-season series, so this news shouldn't be too surprising to fans aware of this. So when FX president Grad explained the season six cut-off, he said simply said it was "the plan right now," and explained that this plan could change.
"We like having shows that rate really well, and there's an instinct that you want it to go on forever. But it doesn't," he explained. "Another metric that's important to us [beyond ratings] is, 'What shows are going to be talked about in the next 20 years?' If you're making a great, 80-hour movie, it has to have a beginning, middle and end. Going out at the right time is going to make your show last forever - we want to make shows that stand the test of time."
In a way, having the series end after six seasons could be a good thing, in terms of quality that is.
Can you think of some shows that went on too far past their prime, therefore becoming a joke compared to what they were before? Does Showtime's Dexter ring a bell? Let us know what you think in the comments section below!
