Take notes, ad execs. This is how you advertise. With news constantly rolling out of CES 2014, the folks behind Robocop released a fake CES keynote address from 2027.
The film, a remake of the Peter Weller-starring 1987 original, is set in the year after this conference when Robocop has become a reality. Promo clips like this have almost made me get over the fact that Robo's hand is human in the remake.
Of course, you probably already know the story behind this one, after all, the original is considered a genre classic, but here's the official synopsis if you don't.
In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years - and it's meant billions for OmniCorp's bottom line. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) - a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit - is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice.
Director Jose Padhila has proven himself as both an action auteur (Elite Squad) and a maker of darker documentaries that take a long hard look at society (Bus 174, Secrets Of The Tribe). Hopefully he can find a way to combine the two and live up to the action-packed satire of the original.
