On the new episode of Paula's Put On, host Paula Miranda sat down with the founders of #HashtagLunchbag, a movement started by a group of friends with a mission to conquer hunger one lunch bag at a time.
Started by Ajay Relan, Will "JDubb" Smith and JD McElroy in a Los Angeles living room on Christmas Day 2012, the movement has spread to 40 cities across the nation with the help of social media.
The group of friends has said that their "goal is to inspire others to come together and join us in our efforts. We truly do believe that small actions mixed with lots of people can empower a big change."
Founder Will "JDubb" Smith had this to say:
"The unfortunate thing about homeless people is they weren't homeless before that. You could end up being that person, and to actually acknowledge someone that gets overlooked on a day-to-day basis and see how much they appreciate it, is amazing."
The group of friends also noted the impact social media can have. Their website says, "Living in an age where digital media reigns and word-of-mouth chatter has taken on a much larger audience, we realize that our grassroots efforts have the potential to go viral and that each and every individual has the power to influence their friends/followers to pay it forward."
Check out Paula Miranda's interview with the founders as they discuss how they got started and what you can do to help fight hunger and homelessness in your community.
