Supernatural returns from its winter hiatus (which fans affectionately call "Hellatus") tonight with "Road Trip," an episode that will feature all the fallout from the midseason finale as Dean tries to eject Gadreel from Sam and deals with Kevin's death.

Showrunner Jeremy Carver sat down with TVLine to discuss where Dean goes from here now that an angel still possesses his brother and Kevin is no more. Firstly, Carver said that the events of the previous episode send Dean down a road that doesn't sound too pleasant:

"So what you're going to see coming up after this is that Dean is going to do whatever it takes to track down Gadreel and eject him from Sam. Part of that is going to be making certain alliances that he never thought he'd be forced to make, but he's at a point where he'll do anything to try and right what he considers to be one of the biggest mistakes he's ever made. Kevin's death, in a slightly perverse way, is going to open up channels into other less savory alliances."

It seems pretty clear that this road leads to Crowley, as evidenced by this preview clip from tonight's episode, which shows Dean negotiating an almost literal deal with the devil:

Carver also told TVLine that Castiel has a renewed sense of heroism and purpose in the ongoing war among the angels and that his recent experiences as a human will "affect his thinking going forward." Gadreel will also continue to work for Metatron to get back his good name.
