In 2013 Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings star Orlando Bloom starred in a new Broadway adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The show, costarring Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad, officially closed in December but not before high definition cameras filmed the performance. With this footage, the production will now have a theatrical run in movie theaters starting on February 13, 2014.
"It's so great to capture it because who knows when it will be on Broadway again," said executive vice president at Screenvision Darryl Schaffer. "It's just such a great production. We're excited to bring it to movie theaters."
This theatrical run is produced by Screenvision and will be available in more than 2,000 movie theaters in all 50 states from February 13-19. Romeo and Juliet had not been produced on Broadway for about 36 years prior to last year's show.
"The timing is right. There are enough platforms out there. Technology has advanced. Now we're getting cooperation from unions and the industry as a whole. So I think now is the moment," said producer Stewart F. Lane. "New York's got the greatest pool of talent in the world and not everybody gets to see that. I am a theater person at heart and this I'm hoping will help bring theater into the 21st century."
"It gives it a certain intimacy and urgency," Lane said of the filming of the Broadway production with the use of nine cameras in the front row seats. "What we've done here is create a whole new art form."
