Several months ago, the famous Midtown Comics store in Manhattan received a package with a poster that claimed to be from Warner Bros. and indicated that Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, a couple in real-life, would star together in a Wonder Twins movie. For better or worse, the whole thing has now been exposed as a hoax.
Pat Evans, the pop culture enthusiast behind the poster, explained his reasoning to Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman author Marc Tyler Nobleman (who is also a hoax exposer):
"With the spate of superhero movies being released, I think it was just me thinking it would be fun to do a spoof version of one," Evans said. "I thought, 'What would be the most preposterous superhero movie you could make? It was just unbelievable enough a concept that it could be true, if that makes sense."
Evans initially made some posters for Comikaze but saw that there was no poster table at the convention last year. Instead, he decided to ship his Wonder Twins poster to some stores around the country, and Twitter did the rest.
"When I made the mailing labels, I figured I should put the WB logo on them-make them look like they actually came from Warner Bros. Otherwise the gag is blown. Same with the logos on the poster. They had to be there or people instantly dismiss it.
...I figured they'd pretty quickly know it was fake but maybe think it was funny and put it in their windows as a joke. I forgot about the magic of Twitter."
