Earlier today, none other than Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, announced the nominations for the 86th annual Academy Awards. This is arguably the quintessential list of the year's best examples of film achievement, but some actors and films were left off the list for one reason or another. Let's examine the nominees and see who didn't make the list despite critical acclaim.

We'll cover the bigger categories but feel free to let us know what sound engineers (for example) you felt were snubbed this year in the comments section below!
In the "Best Picture" category, there was one big film from 2013 not on the list that stuck out to many critics. The Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis topped numerous "Best Movies" lists in 2013, but didn't get the same recognition from the Academy. Staying on topic, the film's leading man, Oscar Isaac, was favored to at least get some recognition from the Oscar committee, but did not in the "Best Actor" category.
Another huge name missing from the "Best Actor" list is Tom Hanks. The Hollywood A-lister blew audiences and critics out of the water in Captain Phillips, but perhaps the Academy just didn't feel the same way.
Hanks' costar in Saving Mr. Banks, Emma Thompson, was snubbed in the "Best Actress" category according to many critics that praised her performance in the 2013 film. Another actress missing from the nominees list is Oprah Winfrey, who garnered critical acclaim for her role in Lee Daniels' The Butler (which was snubbed in the "Best Picture" category).
Other films receiving some sort of snub include Blue Jasmine, August: Osage County, Blackfish, and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Were there any actors or films you didn't see on the nominees list that you thought would be there?
