Aptly titled "Resurrection," the season two premiere episode of 2013's biggest Fox series The Following came back with a bang. The show that captivated so many people last year showed that 2014 would also be the year of The Following. As if not missing a single beat from last year's intense season finale, season two brings us right back into the mayhem and drama of Ryan Hardy's mission to take down Joe Carroll. Is Joe dead? Is Ryan okay? Let's take a look at the season two opener and find out what 2014 has in store for our favorite characters! (SPOILERS to follow)
The episode opens with the cliffhanger ending of season one. Remember how Ryan's neighbor, who happened to be a Follower of Joe Carrol, attacked Ryan and Claire? Well we get to watch that over again, and see how it ends. Basically Ryan kills his neighbor then he and Claire are rushed to the hospital. Claire dies!
Flash-forward one year later to Ryan Hardy in another funk like the last time he was stabbed, but this time around he's exercising and not an alcoholic. So you win some, you lose some!
We also learn that Ryan's in A.A. and is teaching courses on his former profession. His students are smart and he's proud of them. He has a loving relationship with his NYPD detective niece (played by Jessica Stroup), too. He's moving on from the intense tragedies of his life. Perhaps something will throw him back into the terror that he lived before?
After a pretty dull invitation into the new life of Ryan Hardy, we are thrown into the thrilling action that we all loved about The Following last year. A number of masked men enter a NYC subway car with a handful of people in it. The masks are of Joe Carroll, so clearly there are still Followers out there. (Sidenote: Subways have cameras?)
You can imagine how that turned out: everyone gets stabbed! One woman escapes, however, thus starting off the main plot of season two! As the episode continues, the old crew is brought back into the story including Michael Weston who is suspended but brought onto this new case as a consultant - just like Hardy last season! Also, Mike and Ryan have a bit tough relationship since all of the craziness.
Whenever The Following introduces some good-looking people that are also a bit creepy, we know that these are killers, right? Right! Oh wait; this one guy is actually a set of creepy twins? Get ready for a crazy season.
We learn that Emma is a punk or something now and lives with other Followers and her group isn't sure who committed the subway murders. The FBI is, of course, a bit clueless and Ryan doesn't want to be involved ... officially. We find out that he's still trying to figure everything out on his own. He even has a secret room with a tack board of maps and photos. His niece, Max, is also helping him!
Vigilante Ryan finds out Joe is still alive. There's this crazy rogue group of Carroll followers out there, too. What else should we expect as these 2014 episodes move forward? Seeing Joe with a full beard was pretty cool, too!
