Ben Affleck's casting as Batman in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel sequel known as Batman vs. Superman caused a great deal of backlash among some fans, who felt that the Argo director was not right for the part of the Dark Knight. In a new interview, Affleck addresses that response and also offers a glimpse into his interpretation of the iconic character.
Affleck told Playboy (via Kinja) that Warner Bros. told him to expect some hostility from fans and showed him the reactions to other actors in similar roles. He admitted that even he did not think he was right for the part and was going to beg off, but they told him he would fit well into the new depiction of the character and asked him to look at what Snyder was doing. Affleck called it "incredible."
"It was a unique take on Batman that was still consistent with the mythology. It made me excited. All of a sudden I had a reading of the character. When people see it, it will make more sense than it does now or even than it did to me initially."
Playboy then asked how his Batman would be different from the famous Christian Bale version in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.
"I don't want to give away too much, but the idea for the new Batman is to redefine him in a way that doesn't compete with the Bale and Chris Nolan Batman but still exists within the Batman canon. It will be an older and wiser version, particularly as he relates to Henry Cavill's Superman character."
Finally, Affleck poked fun at himself a little when asked how much the hostile fan reaction bothered him.
"I understand I'm at a disadvantage with the Internet. If I thought the result would be another Daredevil, I'd be out there picketing myself. [laughs] Why would I make the movie if I didn't think it was going to be good and that I could be good in it?"
