Jimi Hendrix's biopic starring Outkast's Andre 3000 is finally making its U.S. debut.
According to Rolling Stone, All Is By My Side will be among a slew of films making their U.S. debuts at this year's South by Southwest's film festival in March.
The film highlights Hendrix's life from his start as a New York City backing musician to the time right before his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.
Rolling Stone reports that the film's director and writer John Ridley, who wrote the screenplay for 12 Years a Slave, came up with the story eight years ago after hearing Hendrix's "Sending My Love to Linda."
Ridley has been working diligently on the film but has been forced to cut a few corners. Hendrix's estate would not sign off on using any Hendrix music in the film so Ridley opted to use music by Muddy Waters, the Beatles and the Troggs, among others.
When it came to casting, Ridley had his heart set on one person in particular. Ridley has said that he only considered Andre 3000 for the role. And Andre 3000 worked tirelessly to get the role down packed saying, "I listened to hours of interviews. I watched films - watched his mannerisms."
This will be a big year for film at SXSW. Other music-related films making their debut include Rubber Soul, which reconstructs interviews with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Johnny Winter: Down & Dirty, the Swedish House Mafia doc Leave the World Behind and the A$AP Rocky pic SVDDXNLY.
