In case you happened to catch any of JC Penney's tweets last night (Feb. 2) during the Super Bowl, your eyes were not deceiving you. The retailer's Twitter page received a lot of attention after a couple of tweets gave the impression that the person operating the account had one too many beers at their Super Bowl viewing party.

But according to the retailer's spokeswoman, the tweets were intentional.

"This was part of a planned social media stunt that our social team did to promote the Go USA mittens we are carrying (proceeds support the United States Olympic Committee) they were tweeting 'with their Go USA mittens on," the spokeswoman wrote in an email with VentureBeat.

The official JC Penney Twitter account sent out tweets like: "Who kkmew theis was ghiong tob e a baweball ghamle. #lowsscorinh 5_0"

And another: "Toughdown Seadawks!! Is sSeattle going toa runaway wit h this???"

The two tweet garnered over 42, 000 retweets.

The retailer then went on to apologize to its followers tweeting out: "Oops...Sorry for the typos. We were #TweetingWithMittens. Wasn't it supposed to be colder? Enjoy the game! #GoTeamUSA pic.twitter.com/e8GvnTiEGl"

JC Penney also posted a photo of its USA mittens.

While viewers seem to be underwhelmed by this year's Super Bowl commercials, JC Penney definitely stood out from the crowd.
