Calling any new video game "the next Call of Duty" is pretty bold, but that is exactly what Activision president Bobby Kotick said in a recently released statement about the 2014 title Destiny. Considering both titles are under from his company makes the statement even bolder. Though truthfully, Kotick and the rest of his team are really just hoping that this highly anticipated game lives up to the hype building around it!
"In 2014, Activision Publishing plans to release new games based on Call of Duty and Skylanders, as well as Destiny, our new game from Bungie, which has the potential to be our next billion dollar franchise," Kotick said in an industry call this week (courtesy of Seeking Alpha). "Destiny delivers a groundbreaking new universe, and it capitalizes on advances in connectivity to create an innovative shared world action experience. We expect that Destiny will become the best selling new video game IP in history when it launches across Xbox and PlayStation consoles on September 9."
Though this might seem overconfident and bold, there are plenty of reasons why Activision could be right about Destiny.
Forbes reports:
Landing Bungie to build Destiny was a huge get for Activision, similar to the way EA landed Respawn and Titanfall. Both franchises are hugely important to both companies, and it's going to be something of a heated battle to see which is the bigger series ... Bungie has something like a ten-year plan for the Destiny universe, and it's clear the series is being designed for the long haul. That said, a lot is riding on the assumption that the game is going to be a revolutionary new property.
What do you think of these claims from Activision?
