Will Smith not likely to appear in 'Independence Day 2' or 'Men in Black 4'?

Will Smith was the star of both Independence Day in 1996 and Men in Black in 1997. He starred in two MiB sequels since then, and a fourth movie is in the works. Director Roland Emmerich has also been actively working on a sequel to Independence Day. But is it possible Smith would not appear in either film?

Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin had composed two scripts for the Independence Day sequel, one with Smith as Steven Hiller and one without him. Deadline now reports that the script sans Smith is the more likely option at this point, as the actor has "pretty much decided" not to come back for the film.

The site notes that Smith has not completely ruled it out and points out that Smith's indecision on the subject throughout 2013 (first he was definitely not returning, then he might come back) could be a sign that he has not totally made up his mind; however, Smith's commitments to films such as Selling Time and City That Sailed could mean that he has decided to pursue other projects.

The report also indicates that Smith would likely not return for Men in Black 4, either. The film could be a reboot for the franchise, partially so Sony would not have to pay large salaries to Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. But it also could be a chance for the studio to move forward without Smith at the helm and bring some new actors in to continue the franchise.
