Frank Darabont's return to television after his exit from The Walking Dead has ended almost as quickly as it began, as TNT has canceled his limited series Mob City after just three episodes.
The series, based on the book by John Buntin, aired for just three weeks on the cable network, but delivered lackluster ratings. The premiere earned just 2.3 million viewers, and that figure declined from there. TNT released a statement on Monday (via EW.com) to announce its decision not to order more episodes.
"Mob City was created as a three-week television event and we are incredibly proud of the six hours we presented of this remarkable drama," a TNT spokesperson said. "Although the ratings of the limited series haven't warranted more hours we are eager to work with Frank Darabont again and were delighted to bring the vibrant world of Mob City to life."
The series starred former The Walking Dead star Jon Bernthal (who played Shane), along with Ed Burns and Neal McDonough.
Darabont was the showrunner on AMC's smash hit during the first season but was removed from the show in favor of Glen Mazzara during production of Season 2.
Entertainment Weekly asked Darabont back in November if he still watches The Walking Dead, which is currently enjoying massive success in the ratings. He replied with the following:
"No more than I would go to the wedding of somebody who broke my heart and left me for the Pilates instructor. One does become very emotionally attached to the things that one does. I get tremendously invested. Why would I do that? Absolutely not, I won't."
