Back in 2007, rapper Da Brat allegedly attacked former Atlanta Falcons cheerleader Shayla Stevens with a rum bottle while partying at a popular ATL nightclub. Da Brat ultimately served more than three years in prison for the crime. Now, a Georgia jury has ordered the Funkdafied songstress to pay Stevens a whopping $6.4 million in damages.
Stevens sued Da Brat (real name, Shawntae Harris) back in 2009, while the Grammy Award nominee was serving her prison sentence at Arrendale State Prison after pleading guilty to aggravated assault. First, a Cobb County jury just awarded the ex-NFL cheerleader $3.7 million in compensatory damages. Later, a total of $2.7 million in punitive damages was tacked-on to the verdict. This decision was announced on Thursday (Feb. 27, 2014).
TMZ reports that the jury found the actress responsible for causing Stevens' permanent facial scarring, neurological impairment, and severe mental pain.
Da Brat's attorney B.J. Bernstein considers the verdict somewhat excessive:
"I'm baffled," he told the Journal-Constitution. "She owned up to what happened when it happened and was punished."
Stevens' attorney Mark Link doesn't agree:
"She has a brain injury and is a brain injury survivor. It's not something that will ever go away. She has a scar on her face. She had so much going for her and for it come to an abrupt stop because of this attack."
Da Brat is still on probation for the attack.
