How can Manchester United save their season?

Manchester United are one of the greatest soccer teams of all-time, and until a few months ago they were still a top contender for every trophy. Ultimately Sir Alex Ferguson retiring and David Moyes taking over the world famous franchise has left them in a horrific state. For the first time in years it looks likely that the club won't qualify for the Champions League, which is detrimental to the club in more ways than many could imagine. It looks near impossible for them to qualify this season, although it could mathematically be achieved, but what's next for the club if the worst happens?

If United finish outside of the top four it's likely they will qualify for Uefa's secondary competition, the Europa League. The second rate competition is highly regarded across the smaller clubs, but a club of Manchester United's stature would find it hard to get motivated, and could even lack the will to participate in the competition all together. British soccer expert Adrian Durham agrees and states "There's no way they should slum it in the Europa League. United are way too big a club to be involved with the minnows, so they should just refuse to enter."

This stance could be seen as incredibly disrespectful, but United should not be in this competition. If United can remain in the Champions League this season, and win it, then they will gain entry in to next season's competition, but sadly for the club, that appears as unlikely as qualifying through the league.

If the Red Devils fall short as expected, where do they go from here? Players won't want to join a club in Europe's second rate competition, they'll lose money and they won't want to play in the Europe League.
