Reports had swirled earlier in the week that Warner Bros. would push the release date of Zack Snyder's untitled Man of Steel sequel, currently known as Batman vs. Superman, to April 29, 2016 from its May 6, 2016 release date because of Marvel's unknown Phase Three movie that it scheduled for release on that first May weekend.
But now, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Marvel has decided to pull out the big guns, as Captain America 3 will go head-to-head with DC's Batman vs. Superman in a little more than two years.
Some fans had speculated that the Doctor Strange movie would occupy the spot, but that might have been a risky move for Marvel, as the names of Batman and Superman alone would likely have crushed Doctor Strange at the box office.
"Warners may have been waiting to see what the Marvel title was before considering a date change for Batman-Superman, if the studio indeed blinks," The Hollywood Reporter notes. Indeed, this move could put some pressure on Warner Bros., and an official word about Batman vs. Superman could come sooner rather than later.
This could also be a sign of the confidence Marvel has in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which movie analysts have projected to earn an $80 million or more opening weekend.
