When Sir Alex Ferguson announced he was retiring from soccer management there were two clear contenders to take over the hot seat at Old Trafford. David Moyes and Jose Mourinho. The pair could not of been any farther apart, but the search was narrowed down to the Everton boss and the Real Madrid boss. Upon reading that it seems like Jose would of been the preferred option, but he was snubbed with Moyes getting the job, but nearly a year later, do United regret the choice they made?
Jose has his evident irrational side, and a sense of arrogance that many dislike, but many can safely say he was the one character confident enough to follow in Sir Alex's footsteps. Jose had stunning spells at FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid before returning to his beloved Chelsea. Although the 'special one' returned to London it seemed certain that he'd of jumped at the chance to take over from Sir Alex.
David Moyes had built a stable, successful club at Everton, and many claimed he was like a young Ferguson. The option came down to what the club believed to be most important. It's clear Moyes' loyalty played its part here as United wanted stability that Sir Alex had offered. Although Mourinho's resume was in a league of its own they were worried he'd win and leave as he's done throughout his career. Although United wanted instant success it seems they valued the long term future over short term success, with the inevitable risk attached.
United look to finish trophy less, while Chelsea are in contention to win both the Uefa Champions League and the Premier League. Do United regret this choice, or is it all apart of the vision they thought so in depth about?
