This has been one of the craziest NFL free agency periods in recent memory, with many top players signing for new teams for big financial packages. After the first few hectic days of free agency, Ben Tate was considered the best available running back. The Cleveland Browns added a running back at long last, in Tate. There is now a clearer picture of which players their team needs to target in the coming 2014 NFL draft.
The Browns were one of the worst running teams in the NFL and they knew they needed an upgrade this summer, whether that came from a drafted talent or free agency. Evidently, like many others, they believed that Tate was the man. Stuck behind Arian Foster in the Houston Texans' back depth chart, it was clear that Tate could do more, and luckily the Browns and Tate need each other for the very same reasons, to show they can run the football on a regular basis.
Tate has signed a two-year deal, and although the exact terms have not been revealed it's believed that he will earn in the region of $7 million. The Browns will be happy to part with this figure judging the millions other top players have been given this free agency. Tate has been busy embracing himself to the fans, with countless of happy tweets and pictures on his Twitter account.
Tate, 25, was a Texan for three seasons and he rushed for 942 yards in 2011, but suffered from injuries afterwards. Despite Foster being ahead of him, he rushed for 771 yards and four touchdowns this past season, which sadly for Cleveland, would have been a massive upgrade. It seems like Tate could be the 1000-yard rusher they need, if used in the correct system.
The Browns and their new management seemingly want to improve the team in every area for once. Apparently losing is something the Browns no longer want to do.
