The Manchester United and Liverpool rivalry is one of the biggest there is in soccer, but their was extra tension surrounding their Sunday noon fixture. David Moyes' men have struggled this season and are need of a spark to help them end their season on a much needed positive note, but sadly for the club, Liverpool beat them ..... Putting an end to their already thin chances of grabbing the final Champions League spot. It looks like United will have to settle for the second tier of European football that is the Europa League.
United defender Rafael created controversy as he was booked for a tackle, then conceded a penalty for handball, and arguably he should have received a second yellow and been sent off. Steven Gerrard stepped up and slotted the penalty home, giving Liverpool a 1-0 lead at the break. Liverpool dominated throughout, and United defender Nemanja Vidic received a red card, as Liverpool stomped to a 3-0 victory.
Strikers Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney were hoping to steal the show from Liverpool forwards Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, but they looked a shadow of their former selves, with Rooney having the only chance of note in the first half in which he struck the ball fiercely straight at the Liverpool keeper. United looked lacklustre and created minimal efforts at the Liverpool goal.
United are in need of a big result to change their fortunes, but it doesn't seem anywhere in sight. A year ago it seemed United would be the better team for a long while, but in less than a year it seems roles have completely reversed. Liverpool will now believe they can win the Premier League, and United will look to make a huge comeback in the Champions League or they will be forced to completely write this season off.
