Tony Bellew is one of the most respected boxers in Britain and the world, but when the star failed in his attempt to become the light-heavyweight champion at the back end of 2013 he realized he'd have to head in a new direction. The star opted to train and fight at cruiserweight and last night marked his debut at the weight class. He fought and defeated Valery Brudov
Bellew dominated the majority of the early rounds and looked set to finish the fight in style, but Brudov seemed to find himself in contention once again after a momentum building round, but Bellew after receiving feedback, got back on course and won through a last round knock out. He had knocked him down three times in total, with his final minute left hook ensuring the judges' scorecards would not be needed.
After the fight Bellew told reporters "I won, that's the main thing and the support has been immense" and he then continued, explaining his poor moments "I switched off and I've got a couple of bruises on the face so I've been in a fight." When asked about his critics he replied saying "I feel like I've answered most of them. He can punch but I'm happy I've done it late on because it shows I carry power late."
What does the future hold for the new cruiserweight champion? Will he look to move up or down a weight class again, or will he stay at cruiserweight where he seemed so comfortable in his debut fight?
