Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past hits U.S. theaters on May 23, but fans are also keeping an eye on the 2016 sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse. The director has been teasing possibilities for the movie, and he has done so again with some recent comments about which mutants he would like for what he calls an "inbetweenquel."

Singer spoke to Cine Premiere (via Comic Book Movie) and said he would like to bring back two characters that have appeared in previous X-Men movies:

"I'm considering a Gambit and potentially a young Nightcrawler for Apocalypse," he said. "[I was] going to have Nightcrawler appear [in Days of Future Past] and even wrote a scene, but I felt that we were forcing too many mutants known history."

Fans will remember that Alan Cumming portrayed Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United and Taylor Kitsch played Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Singer recently spoke to Total Film magazine and revealed that the sequel would feature far more destruction than any other X-Men film.

"We're going to deal with the notion of ancient mutants - the fact they were born and existed thousands of years ago. But it'll be a contemporary movie. Well, it'll take place in the '80s. The '80s is a period now. It's hard for me to believe that!" he said. "Apocalypse will have more of the mass destruction that X-Men films, to date, have not relied upon. There's definitely now a character and a story that allow room for that kind of spectacle."

Singer also spoke about the progress on the movie and said, "We're currently breaking the story. We're almost ready to go. Dan Harris, Michael Dougherty and Simon Kinberg are in the office across the street from me, working on story stuff right now. It's great to have Dan and Michael back."
