At long last the 2014 MLB season is under way. However, this year it started down under in Australia. The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks travelled across the world to face one another in an exciting series, and it appears the Dodgers mean business this season, whether it means winning in Australia or the United States of America. Dodgers won the first encounter 3-1, with ace Clayton Kershaw pitching a gem of a game, and now they were looking to sweep the series, and they did so with ease.
Yasiel Puig was the star of the show with three hits, and two RBIs, as his Dodgers went on the beat the Diamondbacks 7-5 at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday. Although Puig and his team appear to be in top form, ready to show the MLB how far they can go this season, the three errors made by the Diamondbacks helped them achieve their goal of a sweep to start the season.
It appears Dodgers manager Don Mattingly preferred the pitching effort of the first, compared to the second, as he said "The first one I really enjoyed actually, this one not quite as much," He continued " It was good to get it, and at the end of the day it's a win. But it's a kind of frustrating one. We walked seven guys the last four innings and we really gave them the chance to get back in the game."
With the Dodgers starting the season so brightly, one can wonder are they a top contender to win the World Series this season? Also, will the high expectations set by Mattingly be a help of hindrance. As for the Diamondbacks, it appears nobody told them the Australian games counted as regular season games.
