After weeks of speculation, American Horror Story series creator Ryan Murphy has finally revealed the subtitle of Season 4.
Murphy tweeted on Monday that the season will be known as American Horror Story: Freak Show. The news is likely not a surprise to those who have been following AHS, but this is confirmation right from the source.
Here's the exclusive details EW.com posted about the new season:
"Set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1950, Freak Show finds Jessica Lange playing a German ex-pat who is managing one of the last freak shows in the U.S. Her group of 'unusuals'? Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Frances Conroy all play performers whom Lange's character has rescued; Denis O'Hare and Emma Roberts are also in talks to return. Freak Show's 13 episodes will track this group as they do anything to keep their business around."
American Horror Story writer Douglas Petrie let the idea slip when he said the following on the Nerdist Writers Panel podcast when asked by another panelist if "carnival" would be the theme of Season 4:
"It doesn't have a title, but that's the idea. Very roughly, that's the idea."
The idea gained some steam after drawings of a fictitious season called American Horror Story: Circus appeared online last year. Fans began to discuss the possibility of a carnival-themed season, and now we know the series will head in that direction.
Murphy, who has said Season 4 will take place in the 1950s, previously offered the following tease to EW.com:
"Next year will be equally as challenging, because so much of it is period and bizarre and crazy and gothic. My feeling is, if you loved this season, you'll love next season. It has the same sort of comedic tone to it."
Season 4 of American Horror Story will also be the last for Jessica Lange, who has led the show in each of its first three seasons.
