It's been a good week for the Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis. Their young star celebrated an opening series win against the Oakland Athletics, then enjoyed his birthday on Thursday 3rd April. Surely that was enough for the opening week, right? Nope. Friday 4th April marks the Cleveland Indians' home opener, and now the day Jason Kipnis won the lottery, securing a massive MLB contract, that will see him stay an Indian till 2019, with a club option for 2020.
It's long been known the Tribe have been working hard to secure some of their talented players for the long term, and Kipnis was one who seemed willing to extend his deal. Kipnis, 27, is always improving and is an asset the Indians simply had to keep if they're to contend. In 2013 he had 86 runs, 160 hits and 84 RBI's. Put those numbers alongside his 30 steals and it's clear why the Indians paid up to keep their man.
Kipnis signed a 6-year contract that's worth an estimated $52.5 million. The deal includes a seventh year option, and it will see Kipnis see out the majority of his peak as a Cleveland Indian. The Tribe, who made it to the playoffs last year, are hoping this signing can help the positivity remain in Cleveland and lead them to yet another playoff place in 2014.
With Kipnis having as good a week as possible, people are wondering how he can build on that. The Indians will want to see one thing, Kipnis starting to repay the $52.5 million they've invested in one of the major faces of their franchise.
