Rob Lowe seems to have a lot to say about Justin Bieber. In an interview he gave with Oprah on her new show Oprah Prime, the former teen heartthrob and bad boy weighs in on everything from going to rehab to what he thinks of Bieber's recent troubles.
Rob Lowe might just be the best person to give advice to Bieber, having been through similar situations during his youth. Lowe who was the one of the first celebrities to have a sex tape, a tape that featured him and two other woman one of which was underage at the time, had his very public exploits during his time as a young adult in the 1980's.
He gained teen idol status after The Outsiders was released and him along with fellow actor and brat pack member Charlie Sheen, got lost in the LA party scene. Spending nearly a decade partying, doing drug, drinking, and going through woman like they were tissues, Lowe finally made his way to rehab and sobriety in 1990.
Lowe tells Oprah that he has "tremendous empathy" for Justin Bieber but that he thinks the real reason Bieber is rebelling and partying is that he's bummed out.
"He makes really good music, he does, but I think he knows the dark secret, and the dark secret is 80 percent of his audience doesn't give a s--t about the music. And he knows it. It bums him out."
He empthasizes with Bieber but he tell the New York Post that he "couldn't even begin to contemplate the level of scrutiny that exists today. It's such a different world. There wasn't social media or cameras on our phones."
He goes on to tell Oprah during their interview that he loved going to rehab.
"I don't know what that says about me. I didn't love the fact that I had to go and it was absolutely painful, but I liked the science. I couldn't have gotten sober without rehab because I needed the science. I needed to [learn about] addiction and what it does to your body and all of the research and the things like that."
Lowe who has been sober since 1990 got married in 1991 to makeup artist Sheryl Berkoff and has two sons with her.
His upcoming projects include a pilot for NBC called "The Pro," a show about a former tennis player working at a country club, and this summer's blockbuster comedy "Sex Tape" starring alongside Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel.
He can appreciate the irony about the title of the movie and goes on to the New York Post, "I decided it was high time for me to actually get something good out of the sex tape."
