Barbara Walters has officially announced the last day that she will be one of the leading ladies of The View. Mark your calendars and set your DVR's for what is sure to be a memorable episode of the hit ABC daytime talk show. The talk show will air during its usually 11 a.m. time slot and be followed by a two-hour primetime special that evening documenting Walter's career. Also this same day ABC News will be naming their New York headquarters in Walter's honor.
While they are at it they should just rename May 16th "Barbara Walter's Day."
Walter's has been with the talk show since its inception, and created the show with Bill Geddie in August of 1997. She will stay on the The View as executive producer and will also continue to contribute to ABC News, something that she has done since 1974.
Walter's departure from the show is not the first; she will follow in the footsteps of Rosie O'Donnell, Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Lisa Ling, Joy Behar, and most recently Elisabeth Hasselback who have all served as co-hosts. Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd and recent addition Jenny McCarthy, will continue hosting the show after Walter's departure.
Walter's was the first female anchor on an evening news show, starting with ABC in 1976 and working as co-anchor on ABC Evening News with Harry Reasoner.
Robert A. Iger, chairman and chief executive of The Walt Disney Company told E! News, "She broke barriers, defied convention, made history and set the standard for journalistic excellence for more than 50 years. It's hard to imagine television without her."
It would definitely be hard to imagine TV without Barbara, we will be sad to see her go.
