Reports had indicated in recent weeks that Captain America 3, or whatever the official title turns out to be, would go head to head with Zack Snyder's untitled Man of Steel sequel, currently known as Batman vs. Superman. Now, Marvel has confirmed the release date of the third Cap solo movie, and those reports turned out to be true.
Marvel posted the following on its website:
"Following the record-breaking premiere of Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier this past weekend, the First Avenger will jump into his next big screen solo adventure in just a little more than two years on May 6, 2016!
Before the untitled Captain America 3 hits theaters, though, fans can next see Cap when he joins the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes once more in Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015!
While that's all we can tell you about Captain America's next outing at the moment, True Believers, you can get your tickets now to experience Captain America: The Winter Soldier all over again, and for the latest news on the Fighting Avenger as it breaks stay tuned to Marvel.com, follow @CaptainAmerica on Twitter and like Captain America on Facebook!"
The Hollywood Reporter first reported that Marvel had decided to pit Captain America 3 against DC's Batman vs. Superman in a little more than two years.
Some fans had speculated that the Doctor Strange movie would occupy the spot, but that might have been a risky move for Marvel, as the names of Batman and Superman alone would likely have crushed Doctor Strange at the box office.
"Warners may have been waiting to see what the Marvel title was before considering a date change for Batman-Superman, if the studio indeed blinks," The Hollywood Reporter noted.
The premiere dates could still change, so check back with MStars for more on this story as it develops. For now, leave your thoughts in the comments below.
