Ed Sheeran took to the Saturday Night Live stage last night to sing his new breakup/revenge song "Don't," which has been getting a lot of attention in the press lately. The new song is rumored to have been inspired by Ellie Goulding and Niall Horan's sexcapades during the time that Sheeran and Goulding were an item.
The lyrics of "Don't" feature the line, "I reckon she was only looking for a lover to burn." Sheeran is almost directly referring to Goulding here by naming her newest single "Burn." Is this a coincidence on Sheeran's part, we think not.
The British singer took to The Mirror to explain the song last week.
"The story in 'Don't' is 100 percent true. I could have gotten nastier - there was more s--t that I didn't put in. I was seeing someone for a bit of time, and then they ended up physically involved with one of my friends in the same hotel that we were staying in, while I was downstairs. And I feel like: Treat people how you want to be treated."
The song claims that Sheeran's girlfriend of the time was caught cheating on him while they were staying at the same hotel. He tells The Mirror that "When we're in the same hotel, and I'm downstairs at my party and you're upstairs doing that, that's disrespectful."
Goulding denied the romance the whole time it was happening, especially when pictures of the two holding hands emerged during the MTV Video Music Awards last August.
Sheeran then took to Twitter to address the rumors saying, "It was going on. And now it's not."
It appears that he has no remorse for penning the song about Goulding, telling Billboard magazine that "If you date a songwriter, be prepared to have songs written about you. If you do nice things, you'll have nice songs. And if you do f*****-up things, you'll get a horrible song."
