Oh no she betta don't!!!!
It seems that Rupaul's Drag Race has offended yet again. The show which has been a pioneer for gay rights has seemed to have offended members within the gay community. Transgender activists have been calling the show transphobic and disrespectful in the wake of the term "She-male" being used.
A mini challenge was featured on a more recent episode of the show where contestants had to tell if a close-up picture was either of a "biological woman or a psychological woman." Contestants had to then brand these pictures with the term "female of she-male". The term which was used by Rupaul in a joking manner seems to have sparked issue within the trans community.
The executive producer of the show issued a statement earlier.
"We wanted to thank the community for sharing their concerns around a recenty segment and the use of the term 'she-male' on Drag Race. Logo has pulled the episode from all our platforms and that challenge will not appear again. Furthermore, we are removing the 'you've got she-mail' intro from new episodes. We did not intend to cause any offense, but in retrospect we realize that it was insensitive. We sincerely apologize."
After six seasons of the show, producers have also decided to get rid of the term "she-mail", used when Rupaul tells the contestants what their weekly challenge will be.
This show has given the trans community a voice, having featured more than one transgender contestant throughout the shows six season run, for example Sonique from season 2, Carmen Carrera from season 3, and most recently Monica Beverly Hillz from season 5.
Beverly Hillz told The Huffington Post that the use of the terms were, "not cute at all" and goes on to say that "people don't understand the daily struggle it is to be a transgender woman."
Carmen Carrera probably the most famous transgender woman to come from Rupaul's Drag Race took to her Facebook page to address the controversy.
"Drag Race should be a little smarter about the terms they use and comprehend the fight for respect trans people are facing every minute of today. They should use their platform to educate their viewers truthfully on all facets of drag performance art.
"Viewers will have to tune in and see the changes Rupaul's Drag Race has made when the show continues airing its sixth season tonight on Logo.
