Based on filmmaker Ridley Scott's sci-fi classic, Alien, the horror/survival videogame, Alien: Isolation, continues the space odyssey of a group of explorers trapped inside with a killing machine. Learn how the game developers designed a futuristic environment that still resonates with the '70s cinematic look.
Though Alien was set in the future, Scott had to conform his visual style to the constraining budget. Remember, the film was made before CGI became the norm and the sets, including the alien creature, had to be built. Though they had better resources, the game developers went back to the original source material to understand how to create their futuristic environment.
Al Hope, the creative lead, explains the '70s influence on the futuristic design, "This is a game set in the future, based on the past. It's a place which we can really relate to. It's also a world where technology can't save you."
Designer Gary Napper further adds how the retro look has defined the gameplay, "If you take the motion tracker for example, it's big and it's heavy. You can't hold it at the same time as a weapon. All it does is tell you the movement of an object on a 2D plane. And even then, a small cone in front of you."

'Alien: Isolation' will be available October 7 on the XBOX and PlayStation. Though times have changed, the videogame follows closely to the sci-fi classic you probably wouldn't expect.
