We have fights coming that involve stars Amir Khan, Floyd Mayweather, Carl Froch and George Groves, but Bernard Hopkins ensured his name would take its place in 2014's greatest boxing achievements. The 49-year-old won the WBA light-heavyweight championship, adding it to his IBF title. The veteran boxer won with a points victory over Beibut Shumenov. The split-decision verdict of 116-111 went Hopkins' way, but the 114-113 decision went in Beibut's favour.
The fans at the arena and at home had an entertaining night as they seen Shawn Porter stop Paulia Malignaggi, keeping his IBF belt. Then they got the chance to watch Hopkins make history. Although it was a magical victory for the champion, many are wondering how long he can remain active for, especially considering he hasn't stopped an opponent in nearly ten years.
Hopkins did knock his opponent down in the 11th round, and that may prove worthy enough of him stepping in the ring at least a couple of times more. He veteran has now won 55 of his 65 fights, with only six defeats to his name, which is an impressive record, especially for a man of nearly 50-years of age. With Hopkins still one of the smartest, and fittest fighters around, perhaps he would consider stepping in to the coaching world, where he can remain active, and give his valuable knowledge to the next generation of fighters.
Who else is there for Hopkins to fight? Is this the best boxing of his career, or his experience seeing him through these close contests?
