It was always likely to be a close, edgy encounter in Atletico Madrid's Champions League semi-final against Chelsea, but fans were perhaps shocked at how defensive and rigid the game panned out. Before their game there was controversy about Madrid's goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, who is on loan from Chelsea. Chelsea instantly wanted to ban him from playing against them, but UEFA intervened and insisted they could enforce no such rule. With the goalkeeping trouble before the game, it was always likely to be the talking point in their actual encounter, too.

Petr Cech missed Chelsea's weekend fixture against Sunderland due to illness, and back-up Mark Schwarzer deputized for him, making a horrendous error which led to their defeat. Cech was back in the team for this Champions League fixture, but when he went down through injury, nobody was surprised.

Cech had to be removed from the game, meaning Schwarzer would yet again replace the Chelsea No. 1, whilst their young goalkeeping prospect Courtois would continue to try and stop his parent club from scoring, or progressing. It seems everything around Chelsea lately has involved goalkeeping problems, which makes a change as it's been the lack of a striker they've often moaned about this season.

Chelsea did however reach their goal of keeping a clean sheet in Madrid, and now they will return to Stamford Bridge next week, knowing that a decent performance will see them through in to yet another Champions League final, but who will be their shot-stopper next week?
