In the year 2019, Bruce Wayne has officially retired from crime-fighting as the Batman. In the DC Nation short, Batman Beyond, Wayne has to help out the new caped crusader when an old foe from his past returns.
In the DC Universe, Batman Beyond is the future's version of the Dark Knight. Bruce Wayne is past his prime and too old to be in the business of crime-fighting, which is why he needs a protégé. After the death of his murdered father, Terry McGinnis puts on the same Bat-suit but with some new modifications. Will Friedle returns to play the voice of Terry and Kevin Conroy is back as the voice of the older Bruce Wayne.
Director Darwyn Cooke became known to many DC Comics fans because of his work as the storyboard artist on Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series. As a nod to The Animated Series, Cooke brings back one of the villains from the popular TV Show.
In the short film, Batman Beyond discovers Bruce Wayne lying beaten on the floor of the Bat-cave. They discover someone wearing Wayne's Bat costume but has glowing red eyes. In Batman: The Animated Series' two-part episode, "Heart of Steel," Batman encounters the supercomputer, H.A.R.D.A.C. In the storyline, H.A.R.D.A.C. kidnapped Gotham City's prominent citizens, including Batman, and tried to replace them with robot duplicates. H.A.R.D.A.C. didn't die in the explosion because Batman's robot duplicate is still around.
