For years the soccer authorities have desperately been trying to kick racism out of their beloved game, and although it's improved, every once in a while one or two fans let themselves down. Barcelona faced Villarreal Sunday, and Dani Alves was about to take a corner when a banana was thrown at him. Often this happens with monkey taunts being thrown their way, and the player (rightfully) struggles to deal with the ignorance of the fan, however, Dani Alves made a stand yesterday.
When the banana landed at his feet he picked it up, peeled it and took a bite. By doing so, many believe that other fans thinking of doing the same, will now think twice about it, not wanting to look stupid. Dani Alves' attitude is one to be proud of and he explained his views on the situation, saying "We have suffered this in Spain for some time," said Alves. "You have to take it with a dose of humour."
Dani Alves had the laugh last, by being influential in their comeback, resulting in an important 3-2 victory. After the game Dani continued his brilliant, cheeky attitude, claiming eating the banana gave him the energy to lead his team to glory.
Alves' reaction has definitely given others food for thought, and it seems like with the soccer authorities working hard to erase it from the game, and the players looking to ignore it, it'll hopefully be a thing of the past.
What do you think of Dani Alves' reaction?
