It looks like Fox will be jumping on the network musical bandwagon.
After the success of last years "The Sound of Music" starring Carrie Underwood, other networks are looking to join in on NBC's fun.
Fox president Kevin Reilly just announced today that they are reworking the musical "Grease" for a three hour live broadcast on their network in 2015.
The musical has been revived on TV, film, and Broadway before; most notable the film version which starred Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta as Sandy and Danny.
"From Broadway to film, and across generations, Grease is one of the most beloved musical stories ever told - and we can't wait to bring it to our air in a spectacular live event. It's iconic characters and addictive songs make it the perfect fit for Fox, and we're going to give it the kind of star power and production quality to make every Sandy, Danny, Rizzo and Kenickie out there want to get up and sing along." Shana C. Waterman, senior vice president for Fox's event series, said today in a statement.
Fox is no stranger to the music of "Grease" having featured it as part of a Glee episode last year, which saw the McKinley High students putting the play on as their spring musical.
"It's incredibly exciting to have one of our first major network productions be based on this universally celebrated Paramount title, and we're thrilled to be partnering with Kevin, Joe and Shana on this epic television event," said Amy Powell, president of Parmount TV. Fox's passion for engaging audiences with bold storytelling and live musical formats make it a perfect home for this special broadcast."
It comes as no shock that other networks would want to cash in on the success that was NBC's "Sound of Music" last fall, which was watched by 18.5 million viewers and secured a 4.6 rating in the key demographic of 18-49 year olds.
Next up for the live musical pioneer is adaptation of the musical "Peter Pan" which will most likely be set to air this fall.
