Imogen Heap's airy voice took over the music world a few years back with a song called "Hide and Seek," but her newest musical venture has the tech world buzzing. No stranger to digital music (she's also the vocalist in electronica group Frou Frou), Heap is exploring new territories with something called "Mi.Mu" - gloves with sensors and Wi-Fi capabilities.
In the photo above from Imogen's official Facebook page, you can see the singer-songwriter sporting these interesting gloves. Sure they look interesting, but how do they work?
Check out one of many demonstration videos that the musician has posted on YouTube to get a sense of how amazing these gloves are for music:
In a new interview with Harrison Weber of Venture Beat, Imogen goes into some more detail about how and why she uses these cool gloves.
"In a way, our algorithms and software are the real meat of the project," the performer said when asked how the gloves work. "It was bluetooth, and now we've gone for Wi-Fi. The gloves come up as an Internet device on your computer. It pops up, they're really easy to calibrate, and you can make your own gestures. You've got up, down, left, right, twist, yaw, pitch, backwards, forwards, up, down, and accelerometer peaks for drums."
Weber asked a great question of Heap: "Is this a return to a more human way of making music? Like composing a digital orchestra?"
"It's about wanting to bring life to instruments that don't have a body," she astutely responded. "They're for things that don't have a character. There are lots of sounds that people make out of nothing - they're sine waves and square waves. For all of those things, gestural interaction can really bring them to life."
